I have tried simply doing this -

$value = "Test";


And the field still shows blank. I'm actually trying to look up a username value from an ID, and when my SQL stuff wasn't working, I figured I'd try the simplest possible example and with the above in the custom code, the output is still always -

Nevermind, this was my fault. I used "Insert Field..." on the Visual Editor, rather than using the "Choose Fields" window to add the field.
