Lookup field - list page with search

After upgrading a project to phpr 10.4 I am having trouble lookup fields and especially when using the list page with search option.

While the popup opens no list is shown , although data exists and paging on the page looks legit.
I have checked that the correct page is selected and can also verify that the list as a separate page opens correctly.

I also checked other lookup options like edit box with ajax etc and it works fine.
Any ideas ?
