Setting Up Online Directory Site with Monthly Billing

I am exploring the design and build of an Online Directory. The one technical aspect of it I am wondering how to include is the ability to charge "Advertisers" when they place their advert. I need to be able to offer either A monthly charge of £x or one off Annual Payment. And of course I need the background management of the payments.

Has anyone had experience of setting this type of system up and if so what is the best way to do it.

My opinion is to use PayPal business account. Once set up, you can then use that as a way to collect money and if you set up your instant payment notification to write back to your database, you will be able to use that to identify your users and their payment status.
