Links from Master-Detail View

I wonder if anybody has managed to do this.
When I open a master-detail table in view, I have the detail table shown underneath the master data I have selected. In view (and add/edit), I would like the detail table to have a button on it, which will take me to the add & edit pages for the detail. At present this is only works for inline add/edit. It would be a great function if the full detail table could open up in a pop-up (or separate tab). Does anybody know this can be done easily? I've tried editing the java but not succeeded.
