Delete Uploads

I have records that contain a document upload / download field . I noticed that the records have to be deleted in the edit field as if you delete a record in the view menu it will not grab and delete the documents in the upload folder . I can manually do this but I have users that may delete the record and the file will still be in the upload folder . Is there any way around this as my upload folder will eventually contain too many documents that are not needed.
