Select records on list page with blank records on load

Hi

I remember scouring the forums before for this and cant find it anymore.
What I would like to do is run a list page with blank results on load and have a drop down box at the top that I can select the records I want to view only. Currently there are 20000 bits of data and I want to filter the page on load. I remember seeing the tips in an article but cant find it now. Anyone know where?

Turn on 'No records on the first page' option on Miscellaneous screen.

Should this still be the case in a details view from a master details record?

Its not working for me - displays the list even though I have do not show records on first page ticked.
