Change ajax dependant field to editable text field on-the-fly?

I have a ajax field that populates from another dropdown. I see that you cannot change (edit) the value of a dependent ajax field, so I am wondering is if there is some way to change the field from a dependent ajax field to, say, an editable text field on the fly, so a value can be entered, if desired? If so, could you provide some sample code?

this option was added in the latest version. ('Edit box with AJAX popup- Allow free input' on the Lookup wizard tab)

Ann, Thank you for your response. I have PHPRunner 5.2 Build 5482. Is this the latest version? I ask because I have not found what you describe.
