 No Records on the First Page Help

When I have this optioned checked in the wizard, my project will not load correctly - it just shows me empty columns and 'No Records Found'. I can't search for anything, it acts like there is nothing in the database at all.
However, if I uncheck it, everything goes back to normal.
My question is: What does this feature do? It does not explain it in the help section, it skips over it.

Hi,
it's behavior by design.

You'll need to implement search or click Show all button in order to display records.

Ok, I sort of see now. When I click advanced search, I can search, and the Show All button appears after that.
However, BEFORE I click advanced search, I am not able to: Quick Search, Show All. Is this normal?

Hi,
to show quick search on the list page add fields for quick search on the Choose fields tab.
