Dropdown box dates

I have not been able to resolve a problem that I have with my Dropdown box dates. I can not remove the date once it is saved. I pick the blank at the top of the Dropdown list but after I press the save button - the date is back. Has anyone had this problem? My version is 5.2 build 5242.
