I have a master table with 6 or 7 links to child tables....
Is it possible to specify the order in which the child links are displayed (left to right order on the list page) short of editing the generated html?

you can change links order on the Visual Editor tab only.

Same comment as usual re: re-builds and resets. For future - would it be possible to have the child links ordered like the other fields are on the Totals tab?
