Storeing Values

Trying to understand these DICT functions. I want to update a history database with the old values on the edit page depending if one perticular field has been changed. So i can compare Old and New values and decide wether to add or not. Just cant seem to figure it out. Also the response.write is a little strange. doesn't seem to work very good for debugging. Doesn't display.
