Validate as Email

SORRY.
Validating fields as Email seems to demand a period "." within the user part of the address. E.g. tom@tomtom.com is invalid, but tom.aa@tomtom.com is valid.
I discovered this when self-registering a user after turning on password encryption and captcha (although I doubt that's related).
Anyone else experience this? I'd say it was wrong.
This is PHPRunner 5.0 build 444.
