UK Pound Sign Translates to wrong symbol on upload

Hi,
I have been using the file upload feature in phprunner to store an .rtf word processing document in a blob field in a mysql table.
When I am on the update page I can click the blob symbol and it downloads the rtf file and opens it up in my wordprocessor which is great but unfortunately

the UK Pound £ sign is translated to a strange looking ￡ symbol which is not quite the same thing. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can prevent it.

Thanks for your reply. I still don't know exactly what was causing the problem but I have gotten around it. I reformatted my .rtf document in my word processor, made some of the formatting a bit simpler, standardised my font to only use arial and the problem has disappeared. I therefore suspect it was to do with my word processing software than any unwanted character translation in the blob.
