radio buttons in edit screen

When I enter my Edit Screen the previous selected values do not show up for the Radio Buttons.
When I enter the List Screen they show correctly.
We have not used Radio Buttons before. Is this how it is supposed to work?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the response.
I have just corrected the problem by changing the fields to varchar. The were char.
Once that was done everything seems to be good. We are using SQL Server.
