Search problems when using 'starts with'

When I search by last name using "starts with" and entering one letter or the whole last name the query results return "no records found". However when I attempt the same search using first name, "starts with" and enter the first letter of the persons name or the first couple of letters of the persons name, the results are returned correctly. Any suggestions? all other search options work fine in my database.
