Calendar Template - Read Only?

Is there a way to use a button to toggle the calendar functionality from edit access to read-only (and back)? The application I am using it in does not require a login. I would like to default it to read-only and provide a button to permit modifications to be made, possibly asking for a password. This will help prevent accidental changes being made.

This how it works by default if you enable guest users access to the Calendar list page.

JUst make sure that you use the latest version of Calendar template, v2 seems to be very old.
