Upgrading a project from 5.3 to 6.0

I have a rather large project on v5.3 currently and it is going well. I would like to migrate it to 6.0 though, to take advantage of new features and stay current.
My question is how do I go about this upgrade without changing the look and feel of the site? I am happy with the styles it currently has, and I do not see them available in v6.0. This means my site will all of a sudden change in layout, look and feel. Is there any way to avoid this, or do I need to invest the time to redesign the visual aspects of the site before I do the next release?
Thank you

Did you try to upgrade and facing a specific issue with some pages or just investigating the possibility of upgrade?
If former, you can send us your project directory zipped along with your database for investigation along with more detailed issue description. We'll find the best way for you to upgrade your project.
