ASPRunnerPro General questions
G

Good day to all. I have recently purhcased a new laptop that has Windows 7x32 and 7x64 available to me. I have just a few questions that I hope I can get direction on:
Scenario:
I currently have 6.3 on Vista32 and am wondering if there are any issues installng this on Win7? I understand all the IIS config (32bit pools and all the Enable Win Features etc).

  1. So question becomes, Should I install the 32bit or 64bit version?
The reason I ask is that I have an associate that says he had issues installing 6.3 on win7x64. He left his system in 64bit mode and is using on his Vista machine.
Aother question is if we were to purhcase the new 7 version (really cool), would we want to install on Win7x64 ot Win7x32?
Most of these questions stem from the fact that all runs flawlessly on Vista32 and I don't want to remove from that machne, then try it on either (or both) versions of Win7 only to have to re-install on my Vista machine again.
Whew... I got it all in, yeah.
Thanks in advance and I appolgize for the questions Before I take the plunge and hopefully haven't wasted time on a question that may have been addressed elsewhere (couldn't find anything tho).

ASPRunnerPro works exactly the same way on 32bit and on 64bit systems.

Thank you sir. I was sure that it would as it will insall in the PFx85 dir and run under the SysWOW64 virtualization context.
I'm going to play it safe and create an ISO of my Vista machine so I can run it in a VM if I have to. We just got the go ahead on three fairly large projects and I didn't want to take the chance of some downtime.
Cheers and thank you very much for the prompt reply.

Actually; I have a problem that you might be able to assist with. Installed Win7x64 and asprunner 6.3. Loaded a project set from my Vista Machine that works absolutely flawlessly there as well as on two client sites.
When I load the project on my Win7 machine and build the project, all seesm to be fine except when I try to do an inline edit. I get an ADODB Stream error. When I placeed a response.write in aspfunctions.asp at lne 257 (code: stream.LoadFromFile Filename) it prints accts_edit.htm as the file that the stream in looking for.
There is no such file anywhere in the project (as in this case we are using inline edit). The browser at this point is now just a dumb screen image of the page and no nav buttons work at all (application wise). Clicking Home, then relogin to the site gets us back to square one, but alas, no edit at all.
I've checked two client sites that are running this app (and have been for about 7 months) and there is no accts_edit.htm on either server, nor is there one on my Vista machine nor our dev server.
We have downloaded the trial version of v7 from the site, but am gun shy about playing with it with this project on Win7x64. So before we try v7, is there something that we need do to 6.3 to make it work on win7x64?
I realize that the product is probably retired, but this leads to the concern about running asprunner on win7x64. Not that we doubt you in any way, but we have in the past seen where upgrading to a new flavor of asprunner often times tends to break certain things and/or the events or dal or other features change. This is why we have stayed with our current build - primarily because everything in it worked for us.
It is entirely likely that we will be moving to asprunner 7, but that will take some ramp up time, and we need to move ahead on these projects with 6.3 while we ramp up on 7.
Additionally, IIS on win7x64 is configured correctly including a review of the online manual config settings. Security (iusr, appool user and 32bit) are all set and work properly. This definately seems to be an asprunner issue.
Any pointers would be appreciated before we commit to moving this to win7, mostly because we cannot run 6.3 on two boxes, we only have one license and are not in the game of running an illegal copy.
Sorry for the long winded diatribe, I wnated to make sure I gave you as much intel as possible.
Thanks again for any pointers or thoughts.

Make sure that file 'accts_edit.htm' in fact exists in 'templates' directory. Just in case do a full project build and upload all files to the web server.
If this doesn't help post your application to Demo Account and open a ticket at http://support.xlinesoft.com sending your Demo Account URL. 'Demo Account' button can be found on the last screen in the program.

Thank you for the post. That is my point, the file accts_edit.htm "Does Not" exist anyhere on any of th etwo production machines (plus our dev server, plus my Vista Laptop).
I'm thinking (lol) that it "May Be" an ms update that got put on. I say this, because I found several blurbs on the interweb about adodb.streams, mdac and a few ms updates that cause issues on win7x64 machines. I'm leaning this way, but it still seems stange that this machine barks about this file and it has exactly the same project file and code.
In fact, I copied the existing directory structure and files from one of our client sites today and put it on the laptop. Will test later.
To be honest, this is a new laptop, so if I have to blow it up and start again, it won't be a problem. But my concern is why this machine is wanting the accts_edit.htm when this project has always used inline editing for the accounts portion.
I maybe should ask, does the generator expect to find an accts_edit.htm even tho it is setup for inline editing? If that's the case, then I can certainly change the project to use editing in a popup or full screen.
Again, I thank you for your time, patience and guidance.
If this gremlin keeps barking at me, I'll open a ticket.
So one last question before I leave for the evening. If I leave 6.3 on my existing machine, can I still upgrade to version 7.x for my new laptop? I don't want to violate licensing, so advice here would be appreciated as well.
Thanks again.

Yes, you can upgrade to version 7.0 and keep version 6.3.

WHEW, got it fixed up. It seems that MS KB870669 disables ADODB.STREAM on Vista and Win7. A few things need to be done, in this order:

  1. Remove the KB (if installed),
  2. Turn off all IIS ASP feature - really important,
  3. Reset IE to Default Security Settings,
  4. Re-enable IIS ASP Features for ASP support,
  5. Follow the ASP Runner guide for using ASP Runner on Win7x64 (I suspect the same would be true for Vista 64, but that's a guess).
As for the upgrade, me thinks that we would have ot purchase a full V7 as we have 6.3 which is probably taoo far back. No biggy.
Fortunately, I am an MS MVP, Certified guy in lots of "stuff", so I was able to communicate with many collegues for much of this information.
Having said that, again, I truely want to thank your for your time, patience and assistance.
