Field Length on List Page

Hi;
I'd like to change the column width(s) on the list page. I followed the documentation on how to do that.
For example, I want to make a particular field 80 pixels.
It seems, however, that because I've got too many fields on a single page the change doesn't take effect. My browser wants to show ALL the fields in the current view.
How can I change the page length??
