 MySQL Auto-increment field

Hi,
I've defined this field at 8 long mediumint which is plenty for my needs. I read that when a record is deleted, the auto-increment field is not renumbered. Does anyone know if these numbers are reused?

Deleted IDs will not be reused.

Thanks. I'll need to make sure my field is large enough for future years.
