Formatting, Advance Search box taking up space in default view

Hello,
I've got a list view page that works nicely. However, when the page opens in its default view, the area on the left side of the page, where the Advance Search box would be, is crowding the main table to the right, even though I haven't selected "Advance Search. This is the default view. I've reset the page formatting several times. Same problem. I've also tried using the html view to move the area around, with pretty disastrous results. If I click the Advance Search button twice, the page orients in the proper view.
How can I fix this so that the default view has the main table spanning entirely across.
